Pet Dog Saves Elderly Woman Attacked by Kangaroo
Murray, Tuesday 22 July 2008 - 13:44:22 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

SYDNEY, Australia — An elderly woman was attacked by a large kangaroo on a farm in Australia and was lucky to be alive after a pet dog leapt to her aid, her son said Saturday.

The 6-foot-5-inch kangaroo lunged without warning at 65-year-old Rosemary Neal as she went to check on some horses in a paddock on the property near Mudgee, 160 miles northwest of Sydney on Friday, son Darren Neal said.

The kangaroo "just jumped up and launched straight at her," Darren Neal said. "He hit her once and she just dropped and rolled. My dog heard her screaming and bolted down and chased him off.

"It wasn't for the dog she'd probably be dead."

Rosemary Neal was hospitalized for for deep cuts to her face, hands and back and a concussion, he said.

Kangaroos are widespread across Australia and there are dozens of species in the family, ranging from tiny, 17-ounce potoroos to Red Kangaroos, the world's largest marsupial that can grow past 6 feet tall and weigh more than 200 pounds.

Most species are not considered aggressive toward humans, and attacks are extremely rare. But males fight each other for mates, rearing up on their tails to scratch at the soft belly flesh of their rivals with the powerful legs they more commenly use for their trademark leaps.

Darren Neal said mobs of kangaroos had become common on their farm and his mother thought nothing of walking through them in the paddock. Usually, they just jump away.

"My mum is 65 years old and about five-and-a-half foot," he said. "Her whole body is sore where she has dropped to the ground."

UFO photographed in the Northern Territory

MYSTERIOUS: These pictures taken by Mr Alan Ferguson clearly show there was something in the air that day.

MYSTERIOUS: These pictures taken by Mr Alan Ferguson clearly show there was something in the air that day.

IS it a bird, is it a plane, or could it be something else?

That was the question Alan Ferguson was asking after taking these pictures at Acacia Hills.

Mr Ferguson, 43, said he was taking pictures of the sky about two weeks ago, but when he downloaded the snaps he noticed a strange object flying among the clouds.

And Mr Ferguson is convinced it could be a sign that life exists beyond the Earth's limits.

"I have been seeing these weird and wonderful things flying around the place for years and no one believes me,'' he said.

Asked if he thought the object was a UFO, Mr Ferguson said: "It's a possibility... we can't be the only people running around.''

Mr Ferguson said he was convinced the object was metallic because he said the sun could be seen reflecting off it.

He said for the past three years he had seen objects moving in the shape of an "N'' at great speed in the sky above his home.

"You picture the letter N in your head, that's the manoeuvre they can make in a split second,'' he said.

UFO spotting has been a regular occurrence in the Territory.

Last month residents at the tiny town of Marlinja, 730km south of Darwin, reported seeing four UFOs.

Hydrogen Vehicles Coming Soon? Two Million Could Be On Roads By 2020
Murray, Sunday 20 July 2008 - 14:44:15 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2008) — A transition to hydrogen vehicles could greatly reduce U.S. oil dependence and carbon dioxide emissions, says a new congressionally mandated report from the National Research Council, but making hydrogen vehicles competitive in the automotive market will not be easy. While the development of fuel cell and hydrogen production technology over the past several years has been impressive, challenges remain.

Vehicle costs are high, and the U.S. currently lacks the infrastructure to produce and widely distribute hydrogen to consumers. These obstacles could be overcome, however, with continued support for research and development and firm commitments from the automotive industry and the federal government, concluded the committee that wrote the report.

Light-duty vehicles, such as cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks, are responsible for 44 percent of the oil used in the United States and over 20 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted. Concerns over climate change, oil imports, and recent spikes in gasoline prices have spurred interest in the development of alternative fuels. In 2003, President Bush announced a $1.2 billion initiative to encourage development of hydrogen production technology and fuel cell vehicles, which are powered through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen and emit only water and heat as exhaust.

The committee estimated the maximum number of hydrogen vehicles that could be on the road in the coming decades, assuming that practical technical goals are met, that consumers want hydrogen cars, and that government policies are in place to help drive the transition from oil to hydrogen fuel. The findings therefore represent potential best-case scenarios rather than predictions.

According to the committee, it will take many years before hydrogen vehicles will significantly penetrate the light-duty fleet, even though technological developments have been progressing rapidly. Production of hydrogen vehicles could increase significantly by 2015. At this stage, their cost -- although dropping rapidly -- would still need to be heavily subsidized for consumers.

The maximum practicable number of hydrogen vehicles that could be on the road by 2020 is 2 million, says the report. By 2023, the total cost of fuel cell vehicles, including the cost of hydrogen fuel over a vehicle's lifetime, could become competitive with conventional vehicles. At that point, the number of hydrogen vehicles on the road could grow rapidly, to nearly 60 million in 2035 and 200 million by 2050.

Queensland: Tasmanian Devil Sighted
Murray, Friday 11 July 2008 - 00:55:25 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

A mainland Tasmanian devil sighting has been reported from Blackbraes National Park, 320 kilometres south-west of Cairns, Queensland, according to Mainland Devils’ Chris Rehberg.

Neil Van contacted Mainland Devils to report an unusual black animal which he and a friend sighted at 9.30pm on Wednesday, the 2nd of July 2008. They were travelling along the Kennedy Developmental Road near the northern boundary of Blackbraes National Park in Queensland when they saw the dark coloured animal feeding on a road-killed wallaby. Says Van, “A mate and I saw a weird animal fairly close up … with the way it ran and looked we both looked at each other and said at the same time ‘it looked like a Tassie devil.’”

The first sign which the pair saw was the animal’s eyeshine as it looked up from feeding on the carcass about 50 metres in front of them. “They eyes were reflective and looked yellowy-white,” said Van.

British UFO sightings at 'bizarre' levels
Murray, Thursday 10 July 2008 - 12:27:55 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

Whether alien activity or natural phenomena, reports of UFOs have flooded in this summer from across the country.

Plotted on a map of Britain, the sightings can be seen to stretch from Liverpool to Dover and from Llanelli to Derby.

Whatever the explanation, experts agree that the number of suspected flying saucers has hit unusual highs this summer.

Malcolm Robinson, who studies the phenomenon, said: "Something very bizarre is happening in the skies over the UK."

The founder member of Strange Phenomena Investigations, added: "There has been an unusual number of sightings recently.

"Some experts believe it could be linked to global warming and craft from outer space are appearing because they are concerned about what man is doing to this planet."

Among mysterious flying objects spotted in recent months was a 'glowing' disc spotted above the M5 motorway.

Royal Navy aircraft engineer Michael Madden said he watched the UFO for three minutes before it 'zoomed off' near Weston-super-Mare in Somerset.

Earlier, in Basingstoke, witnesses claimed to have seen a fleet of 12 orange objects in the night sky for half an hour.

And in St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan a police helicopter crew gave chase to another UFO after it appeared to veer at speed towards their aircraft.

One UFO spotter however was left red-faced after his report of a mysterious flying saucer in South Wales turned out to be nothing more other-worldly than the moon.

UFO filmed over Islington (UK) could be a spaceship, says expert
Murray, Thursday 10 July 2008 - 12:16:44 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

VIDEO footage of a mysterious triangle of lights hovering in the night skies above Islington has been verified by a UFO expert who believes it could be an extra-terrestrial spaceship.

New North Road resident Paul Southcott, a member of the UFO Supernatural Study Group, has told the Gazette he is “90 per cent sure” that spooky footage of a trio of bright orbs moving above the Chapel Market area is genuine.
The startling video was shot at 9.30pm by a 45-year-old mother-of-two from her second-floor home off Essex Road in April 2004. Two weeks later she filmed a second larger unidentified orb that appeared in exactly the same position at the same time - but has not revealed the footage until now for fear of being branded a hoaxer.
The woman, who does not want her identity to be revealed, said: “It was like a blob in the sky above the trees. I’m 100 million per cent sure it was a UFO because it was like a big orb darting about like a lunatic. I zoomed in on it and it looked like a big ball of cells, like they would look if you saw them through a microscope.
“I wasn't scared at all because I was so fascinated. I stayed up all night afterwards looking at the footage. It was so exciting and I've been wondering what to do with it ever since. It was only when I looked at other UFOs on the internet that I realised it was exactly the same as all those other sightings.”

Expert disputes claim of great white shark in Tuggerah Lake
Murray, Thursday 10 July 2008 - 12:11:41 // comment: 1, Trackbacks:

DOUBT has been cast on the legend of a great white shark, allagedly spotted in a lake on the New South Wales Central Coast yesterday.
A shark expert is convinced the story is a hoax, and doesn't believe the creature could have fit into Tuggerah Lake, even if it wanted to get in there.

"Great whites don't go into estuarine or lake systems," John West of Taronga Zoo told Fairfax media.

"It wouldn't even fit in that lake, I don't know how deep the entrance is but you'd need several metres for a shark that big to get into it.

"A large shark like that would stick out like dog's balls."

Police in the area have said there's been no further sightings of the beast but the alleged sighting has been the talk of the town.

People had been warned to exercise caution in surrounding waterways after a commercial fisherman claimed to have snagged a shark while casting nets off Canton Beach, on the north side of Tuggerah Lake, which opens into the Pacific Ocean at The Entrance.

A police statement said the man was forced to release his nets when the full-grown white shark, estimated to be up to seven metres long, became entangled in them.

Great white shark 'in lake'
Murray, Thursday 10 July 2008 - 12:07:05 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

Police issued a warning today after a seven-metre great white shark was reportedly netted and freed in a Central Coast lake.

A commercial fisherman reported to police that he netted the monster in waters at a popular school holiday vacation spot at Tuggerah Lake.

The fisherman reported snaring the seven-metre shark in nets he had cast off Canton Beach, at the northern end of the lake about 5.30am today.

"He claimed that he actually caught the shark in his net and the shark came up and started thrashing about, and hit his boat,'' said Chief Inspector Tim Winmill said.

"He said it was bigger than his boat - he's got an 18-foot boat and he said it would have been about 21 feet.

"Tuggerah Lakes is only about 12 kilometres long and five kilometres wide.

"It's not a big lake but it's a bloody big shark, if it's true.''

The shark was last seen heading south towards the middle of the lake, Chief Inspector Winmill said.

Mick Crowe, president of nearby Soldiers Beach Surf Club, expressed surprise there had been reports of a shark in the lake.

"That's quite bizarre if that's the case - Canton Beach is only ankle-deep water for the first 150 metres,'' he said.

But the Department of Primary Industries and the Fisheries Department both believed the fisherman's claims, Chief Inspector Winmill said.

"They believe he's a credible witness, he's been a commercial fisherman for a long time, he's well aware of species of sharks ... they don't have any reason to doubt the truthfulness of his allegation.''

The fisherman would not speak publicly about his encounter with the great white.

"He's adamant he doesn't want to speak to any form of media, he's an elderly gentleman who has a mistrust of the media,'' Chief Inspector Winmill said.

Psychics search for Falconio in new series
Murray, Sunday 06 July 2008 - 22:58:28 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

REALITY TV has sunk to a new low, with psychics this week scouring the desert in a competition to find the remains of murdered British backpacker Peter Falconio.

A team from coming Channel 7 show The One stayed for two nights at the Ti-Tree Roadhouse, 200km north of Alice Springs, leaving on Wednesday.

Roadhouse employee Scott Kelso said the group of 14 was made up of psychics and members of the TV crew.

"They said they were looking for his (Falconio's) body," Mr Kelso said.

"They went 20km out from Ti-Tree but they didn't find anything."

The show, which claims to be searching for Australia's most gifted psychic, sets a range of challenges for the seven participants.

A Channel 7 spokeswoman confirmed that The One was filming in the area but could not comment on what it was doing.

UFOs invade Northern Territory town!
Murray, Sunday 29 June 2008 - 13:39:47 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

A SMALL Territory community is still reeling with shock after four UFOs descended on their Outback homes.

Families spent hours in fear as what appeared to be three spaceships hovered in the distance with another just metres above their houses.

The drama at Marlinja, population 112 and 730km south of Darwin, began at 8pm on Sunday.

Resident Janie Dixon said it started as an "ordinary" night.

"The kids were on the basketball courts, shooting a few hoops, and I was indoors talking to my two nieces when we heard a strange, loud noise," she said.

"We ran outside but at first we couldn't see anything -- it was really dark and we could hear the sound.

"The sound was horrible. It sounded like something was going past.

"We thought it was a jet. I saw what I thought at first was the evening star, the first star you usually see at night.

"But then we saw three red lights in the distance, and the sound kept getting louder.

"The ground felt like it was shaking, so we ran inside and shut the doors.

"My nephew and niece were looking out through curtains. The thing came closer, circled around the basketball courts and then came so close above our house.

"The kids at the basketball courts ran -- two girls stood there looking towards the sky.

"They tried to see what it was but all they could see was this bright red light in the pitch black."

Ms Dixon said the UFO hovered above the homes for what seemed like a couple of hours.

She said at one stage the phone rang, but went dead when she tried to answer it.

"Then the light in the house became so bright, it was like we were sitting in a football stadium," she said.

"After a while, after the things all disappeared... I think it was about 11pm by then.

"We went outside and were just sitting around drinking tea and talking about it all. The kids were put to bed.

"We heard the noise again and it came back, but disappeared again moments later.

"We were all really frightened.

"It was a big shock and I couldn't sleep."

Uncovering The Truth Behind The Largest Marsupial To Walk The Earth
Murray, Monday 23 June 2008 - 23:09:34 // comment: 0, Trackbacks:

ScienceDaily (June 16, 2008) — University of Queensland research is uncovering the truth behind the largest marsupial ever to walk the earth – the 2.5 tonne wombat-like Diprotodon.

Standing 1.8 metres tall and reaching up to 3.5 metres in length, this huge beast lived more than 100,000 years ago, and despite being one of the most celebrated examples of Australia's Pleistocene “megafauna”, there is very little known about them.

That is about to change thanks to work by Dr Gilbert Price, from UQ's Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis, who has turned conventional wisdom on its head by discovering there was only one species of the massive animal.

“Traditionally it was thought that as many as eight species existed,” Dr Price said.

“But my research, which has taken me to many of the world's leading museums, demonstrates there was only one species all over Australia.

“Even though Diprotodon occurred from literally creek to coast, spread from as far south as King Island in Bass Strait, to Far North Queensland, to Western Australia, and everywhere in between, they were all the same species.”

Dr Price, who started his research into Diprotodon while a post-grad student at the Queensland University of Technology, said most of the confusion stemmed from the fact the animal came in two distinct sizes – large and extra large.

“The problem was compounded because many early descriptions were based on fragmentary fossil remains,” he said.

“So most of my research was based on going to museums such as the British Museum of Natural History, trawling through draw after draw of fossils and examining every specimen.

“This led me to conclude that while the Diprotodon can be extremely variable in size and shape, they were all of the same species.”

He said the two distinct sizes was also easily explained.

“Just like many modern animals, the difference in size comes down to sex,” he said.

“This one is just much more pronounced with females almost two-thirds the size of the males.”
