Magical Ethics is not a subject that I ever wanted to discuss on this site. But recently due to questions from a number of visitors I think the time has come to discuss this topic.

I believe that magic can be used to improve our lives. Of this I have no doubt. But magic must be used correctly and controlled properly. 

It is my belief that the human ego (see: Goals of the Natural Witch) is the most dangerous thing on the planet. It is this ego that has caused beatings, murders, thefts, wars and genocide etc. Or to put it simply Suffering.

It is also this ego that makes humans abuse their magical abilities to manipulate and control others. And it is this reason that Witches egos must be kept in check. (see also: How do I begin to practice Witchcraft?)

Magic is a powerful "gift" from the universe. Like all gifts magic must be respected and used responsibly. If not unfortunate and/or dangerous circumstances could result. I learned this very early on in my studies. Check out the list below there are no hard and fast do's and don'ts just common sense. 

 

Natural Witch Ethics

1. Magic should never be used to manipulate or control another person without provocation.

What I am saying here is that you live and let live. Keep to yourself and do not intervene in anyone else's life. If someone has wronged you without you doing anything at all to provoke them. Then you may bind the person from harassing or harming you. But first as always consult your Divinatory tool. Do not bind or curse someone who has harmed or wronged one of your friends. Even If your friend asks you to help in a situation such as this. Examine the situation carefully with common sense then consult your Divinatory tool. (see: Divination) The reading should give you the real problem in the situation. Do not take what others say at face value. Use your head and contemplate the situation sensibly before taking any action.

2. Never cast a Love Spell on a particular person. 

You should never cast a love spell on a particular person that you may have a crush on. This person could end up not being the person you thought you wanted. They may be mean, abusive or just plain not suited to you. If you are looking for a lover. Cast a spell and ask for the person who is ideally suited to you. This way you can't loose. It may take time but it will be better in the long run. For you!

3. Negative magic attracts the Negative.

Casting negative spells or curses is not good. Negative magic attracts negative feelings, vibrations, energies, and entities. You don't need any of these. But in saying that I have cast curses before. Although I have only ever cursed when I know that I have done nothing to provoke what I am receiving. As with point No 1. Consult a divinatory tool and check out the situation if you are sure you are not in the wrong you may bind or curse. 

BUT BEWARE, NEGATIVE ATTRACTS THE NEGATIVE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

4. Karma

Karma is the universal rule that what you send out to the universe you will receive back again. And this rule does apply to magic. Wiccans believe in the Threefold law. That what you send out you get back three times. I tend to disagree here I am more willing to believe that you get back exactly what you send out. Not what you did times three.

5. Do not use animal products in your magic!

Try to use, Herbal ingredients at all times. Lets not harm our Animal Teachers/Friends by using products made from their suffering. If you need to use something such as Musk use a synthetic alternative. (see: Incense)

6. The free will of all and harm to none.

Always finish off any spell with this affirmation. Magic does take the path of least resistance. Meaning magic will find the quickest and easiest route to give you what you are asking for. A lame e.g. is... You do a prosperity spell to ask for more money and your favourite Aunt who is filthy rich dies leaving your a big chunk of her estate. I am sure this is not the way you would like to receive your cash. Use this affirmation after every spell and ritual it is an insurance policy telling the universe that the money or whatever you are asking for will come to you of free will and no one will be harmed in the process.
