You will read in many books and witchcraft and websites etc, of how to construct or "write" your own spells. Many authors and "experts" in the magic and witchcraft field will tell you that you need certain specific herbs, stones and other items for your magic to be successful. My answer to this is: "What a load of hogwash!"

If indeed you agree with my theory of magic on my How to begin in Witchcraft Page. You will realise that intent is really the only ingredient you need for your magic to be truly successful. I have in the past been criticised by visitors by simplifying magic too much and making it lazy. Still I stick to my theory.

Early on in magic I collected lots of items for spells i.e. Herbs, Semi precious stones, Incense, Candles and other odds and ends. Still to this day I have many of the original items laying about not being used. Take my four step rule to magic as seen on the How to begin in Witchcraft Page.

Willpower

Physical Actions

Only the last rule has anything to do with physical items used in a spell. The first three rules are always the most important. And are also where you derive your personal power for the spell to actually work.

For e.g. Another form of magic which I have not yet discussed on this site is that of Petition magic. Petition magic is a magical spell, rhyme or words of intent that are written on a piece of paper in a magical alphabet such as Theban or the Nordic Runes. A little ritual is performed and the intent is sent off by either burning the paper or burying it or placing it in a special place. Many authors will tell you that the paper must be virgin parchment hand made by Tibetan Buddhists (yes I am being sarcastic) and you must pen your spell with a quill and a special magical ink, such as Dragons Blood (No I am not being sarcastic).

In regard to my theory of magic the spell can be written on regular paper (preferably that hasn't been used for anything else) and in normal ink from a pen you don't use for anything else but for magic writings. And you can write it in English. The Thought is still there, The Desire is still there, the Willpower is certainly there just the pain in the butt trying finding the specific items you can only get via mail order from Occult shops is not there.

Don't get me wrong lots of witches believe that the process of finding the items for a spell gives it more power and I kind of agree with them. But if you live in a remote location where it is difficult to find items. Perhaps you should study the plants of geology of your local area or even check out the plants and herbs that grow in you own garden. You will be pleasantly surprised to find many herbs applicable to magic and growing right in your own yard. And doing a search of your own back yard is adding to your power just as much as scouring the Internet and Occult Stores for ingredients that you can only find in the deepest parts of the Amazon!

In my humble opinion the best way to select ingredients for a spell is to either find yourself a good table of correspondences or alternatively make your own table of correspondences with herbs stones and other items that are not as rare to find or that are accessible to your area.

Above all the Physical Part of the spell is not the most important. As I stated many times on this site you are the magic your Personal Power your Intent and your Desire. But if you do a physical part to your spell always have three steps in the physical process. i.e. For Petition Magic find the items (pen and paper), Write the Spell and do something with it e.g. Burn it, Bury it.
